Issue 42, Botanical makeovers

As seed trays scattered across the various window sills of my home come to life, I start to yearn once again for a greenhouse to nurture them properly. Inhibited by the cost, purchasing one has been way down on my wishlist. However, since visiting Grace Farrimond’s Not So Secret Garden and seeing her clever upcycled greenhouse, I’m keen to have a go building my own with a little guidance. I’m now looking in skips for more than just unwanted furniture – windows and doors have also been added to my treasure-hunt list!

Even if you don’t have a patch of outdoor space, you can still bring flora and fauna into your home. We love the bright coral-painted drawers on the cover which, lined with trays and filled with plants, make a stunning display.
Alternatively, be inspired by our botanical-style drawers created using image transfers and crackle glaze – the effect is beautiful. Other great techniques to try this month include spray painting a woven chair, cutting copper pipe to make a magazine rack and getting a contemporary designer look with stencils.

And if you’re on the lookout for your next upcycling project, why not try an auction house. We visited Wessex Auction Rooms to bring you the ultimate guide to bidding with confidence.
